An Overview of Future Hybrid Car Models

There are many future hybrid car models on the horizon that hold the promise of improving the environmental and economic benefits offered by hybrid cars. Here is a brief overview of some of these promising technologies:

• Plug-in hybrid cars use larger electric battery backs that allow the car to be driven at high and low speeds using only electric power, improving fuel efficiency by 40% over conventional hybrids while emitting even fewer greenhouse gas and toxic emissions. The battery packs can be charged from any common household outlet and some charging is even done when the car brakes, improving fuel efficiency even more. At present, high prices are the main bar to wider adoption of the technology although Federal and state governments are encouraging the purchase of plug-in hybrids by offering tax credits to early adapters.

• Flex-fuel hybrid cars are future hybrid car models with internal combustion engines that can run on either gasoline or E85, a fuel substitute which is composed of 85% ethanol (made from plants such as corn) and 15% gasoline. However, supplies of ethanol and other bio-fuels are currently not enough to ensure that flex-fuel cars can become economically feasible.

• Diesel hybrids use internal combustion engines that run on clean diesel fuel rather than gasoline, providing better fuel efficiency than conventional gas-run hybrids while still reducing toxic emissions. And diesel hybrids are more powerful than conventional hybrids. The current hurdle that needs to be overcome is the higher cost of clean diesel technology, which translates to more expensive hybrid cars.

• Hydrogen hybrids are considered one of the most promising technologies for creating genuine zero-emission vehicles. The key to the success of this technology is the development of a storage medium that allows the hydrogen to be stored in the vehicle for use as a fuel. However, aside from the expense of the technology, the wider adoption of hydrogen hybrids is also hampered by the lack of a widespread refueling infrastructure. And many manufacturers see the development of a successful hydrogen hybrid car not as a goal in itself but as the bridge towards hydrogen-powered fuel-cell hybrid cars.

• Fuel-cell hybrids use fuel cell batteries fueled by hydrogen to produce electricity that powers the car. However, the prospects for future hybrid car models that use fuel cells are still uncertain as car manufacturers have to overcome many obstacles such as reducing the size and weight of the fuel cell as well as the high cost of the technology.

If Diesel automobiles are better for the environment, why is the highest green car rating only at 50?

Question by _scoot: If Diesel automobiles are better for the environment, why is the highest green car rating only at 50?
I noted with interest the yahoo answers to the diesel question posed a little while ago about someone able to buy a new car; and should it be a diesel or petrol? Again, if diesel is ultimately better for the environment (especially if you put a sustainable source of biodiesel in it–there are unsustainable sources by the way–), why is the top diesel vehicle only a 50 on the yahoo green rating?

Answer by Louis G
They are not better for the environment actually. They pollute alot more than gasoline cars on a miles driven rate. for every mile you drive with a diesel car you will pollute more than an equivalent gasoline car. Bio-disel isn’t better for the environment.. it’s just renewable. Which means that we could rely less on foreign oil. They do get better MPG ratings, however that is because diesel is a more dense fuel. It still pollutes alot more than gasoline, and it’s why in 2007 that no diesel cars can be sold in the US because they don’t meet new, more strict, emissions standards.

from the website below:
“For the same load and engine conditions, diesel engines spew out 100 times more sooty particles than gasoline engines. As a result, diesel engines account for an estimated 26 percent of the total hazardous particulate pollution (PM10) from fuel combustion sources in our air, and 66 percent of the particulate pollution from on-road sources. Diesel engines also produce nearly 20 percent of the total nitrogen oxides (NOx) in outdoor air and 26 percent of the total NOx from on-road sources. Nitrogen oxides are a major contributor to ozone production and smog.”

Whos at fault? When I went straight on green and hit by a car turning left who claims he had a green arrow?

Question by tomstone123: Whos at fault? When I went straight on green and hit by a car turning left who claims he had a green arrow?
I was at the intersection on a red light, when it turned green I drove straight and as I was going a car on my left hand side made a left turn into my line hitting my car on the back of the left side of the car. He claimed that he had a protected left turn when he made the turn. But when I stop on the side half a dozen cars behind me passed us. Also I later checked that intersection, when his green arrow come up it is also green for for the cars going straight in his direction.
I made a pic of what happened because my explaination was a little confusing

Were there witnesses? I was involved in a similar situation where the light turned yellow and a guy made a left in front of me and I hit him. He said it was my fault but there were witnesses that gave statements saying he was at fault. Also, if you fight it hard enough I would think that there is a way to find out what the programmed pattern for that intersection is.

How Do Electric Cars Work?

By: Chris
Posted: Jan 04, 2011

Opting for an electric car is a wiser and more eco-friendly option than the conventional cars as they are less polluting and more efficient. Gas guzzling automotive may soon be a thing of the past as these electric cars are fast gaining popularity due to their multiple benefits for the users.

The marked differences between an electric car and a gasoline car are determined by the power source that provides the motive force of operation. Electric cars run on AC and DC motors and are powered by rechargeable batteries whereas gasoline cars run on internal combustion engines that convert chemical energy into mechanical energy.

Electric cars are known for their extensive wiring. To power up an electric car, there is no need to visit a gas station, it is just simple, just plug into an electric socket and get it recharged. In case of solar powered electric cars, the user needs to use solar cells to charge the batteries.

The electric car engine works by a DC or an AC electric motor similar to that used in a fan or a compressor. The DC motor gets its power from the rechargeable batteries and they provide the motive force for motion of wheels. The power however is not directly fed to the motor but mediated by an AC or DC controller mechanism.

The controller device determines the speed control of an electric car, and also determines how much power is to be delivered to the main electric motor that drives the wheels. The accelerator pedal of the electric cars is connected to potentiometers, which are further connected with the DC controller. There is a proportional ratio between how much you press down on the accelerator pedal and how much current is delivered by the potentiometers to the controller. Depending on this current supply, the controller delivers power to the motor and thus speed is regulated in an electric car.

Electric cars have a potential speed of 100 miles per hour and are both user friendly and highly efficient. The only downslide in buying them is that, since their cost of production is high, they of course are costly and in most of the circumstances cannot be afforded by the common man. But the heartening news is that with the advancement to technology, new and cost effective means of producing the electric cars is being propagated and we can surely see more of them in our streets.
