Hybrid Electric Car: A Promising Technology for a Promising Future for the Environment

A hybrid-electric vehicle, or HEV, combines an electrical energy storage system with an occupied means of generating electrical energy, usually through the consumption of some type of fuel. Each type of HEV has its own operating quality and chosen design practices, as well as advantages and disadvantages.

The development of interior ignition engine vehicles, especially in automobiles, is one of the supreme achievements of modern technology as a new rising energy saving and environment -friendly vehicle, that is why the hybrid-electric vehicles were created to give convenience to every human.

In the process of creating the hybrid electric car, the most important is the energy saving and the environmental protection. Wherein nowadays this are the common problems faced by the society.

Having the hybrid-electric car evolved from the electric car. However, the main disadvantage of the electric car is that it is mainly dependent on the batteries. Therefore, has limited range.

First of all, the hybrid electric car was supposed to be an electric vehicle with batteries for power storage and is also equipped with an on-board heat engine-powered generator. This means that this type of hybrid has an extended range.

The heat engine power and the battery power are specifically intended as an important scheme that constantly modulates the excess between the heat engine and the battery power systems. This will also depend on the driving schedule.

]]>

Since the beginning of the use of automobiles, electric cars have been already recognized and conceptualized. Even though the electric power train is better in various aspects, as an energy source, the battery was unequal to the superior-energy content, easiness in terms of the handling, and inexpensive and profuse supplies of motor fuel.

Now, it has almost been a century since the electric car has been popularly discussed, but recent developments in the HEV technology and the growing concerns for the environment has revived the drive for an HEV and this has become a realization today.

We can consider the personal means of transportation as a very important bond in the economic chain of current modern societies and that a private vehicle appears to be the popular choice.

Electric vehicles are more energy efficient than the contemporary vehicles wherein the electric vehicles operates at approximately 46 percent of effectiveness, while a contemporary vehicle operates at about 18 percent only.

There are studies that generally concludes that electric cars with batteries are approximately 10 to 30 percent more efficient with energy than the usual gasoline cars, depending on the exact assumptions of the vehicles energy usage and energy chain efficiency.

Certainly, the comparisons of the electric vehicles and the conventional vehicles are comparisons between an extremely developed power system that is nearly in the end of its research and development, and the innovative power system in the beginning stages of the development wherein important development can be expected as the new technology evolves.

Furthermore, the advantages of electric powered modes of transportation extends beyond the true outlook of economizing energy. Electric generation plants can use substitute fuels that are not adaptable to portable power systems.

Electric vehicles are the definitive alternative fuel vehicles because their power is taken from the source fuels utilized to produce electricity. Aside from that, the flexibility of the fuel alone can offer important useful and economic advantages especially in relation to a variety of energy resources.

The electric car is truly a promising technology that could transform one’s means of transportation into a far more environmentally type of commodity. Through this innovation emission controls become more important, effective and economically beneficial.

Hybrid Car Buying Tips

Know Your Hybrid MPG

Make sure your hybrid is going to reward you at the pump. Just because a car is slapped with a hybrid label it does not necessarily mean it is fuel efficient. Many hybrid cars only receive 26 mpg or less in the city. That is considerably less than the most fuel efficient hybrids which get better than 40 mpg. If you factor in the rising price of gas, over time the difference could add up to thousands of dollars.

Most Fuel Efficient Hybrid Cars:

2010 Toyota Prius – 51/48 2010 Ford Fusion – 41/36 2010 Mercury Milan – 41/36 2009 Honda Civic – 40/45 2010 Honda Insight – 40/43

*city/highway

Choose a Hybrid with Low Emissions

Other than helping the environment choosing a lower emissions hybrid is an important consideration because it determines how much of a Federal and State tax credit you can claim. Usually the lower the emission standard the higher the credit will be. But buyer’s be aware, the Federal government discontinues the tax credit for hybrids who’s manufacturer has surpassed 60,000 in total hybrid sales. The Prius is a prime example of this phase out. Because Toyota has surpassed the 60,000 mark the Prius no longer qualifies for the Federal credit.

]]>

Make sure to ask the dealer which emission standard the hybrid car you are thinking about purchasing qualifies as and whether or not it is still eligible for the Federal incentive. While you are at it ask them how much of an incentive the State is offering as each State’s hybrid tax credit varies.

List of hybrid cars that qualify for the hybrid tax credit.

Consider Battery Reliability

Choose a car whose battery is proven reliable and has a long standing warranty period. A hot topic amongst hybrid owners and enthusiasts alike is the reliability and replacement cost of the battery used to power hybrid vehicles. Replacing a hybrid battery is very expensive, around ,000 depending on the car, however they are made to last the lifetime of the vehicle and most manufacturers offer an 8 to 10 year warranty.

Alert: Unlike conventional car batteries a hybrid battery cannot be jumped. So if the battery dies you are forced to replace it.

Test Drive for Performance

Common complaints associated with popular hybrid cars is they lack in performance. A hybrid that gets great fuel mileage is probably not going to win any races or feel like they handle corners on rails. These vehicles are built for efficiency not speed and most are equipped with 4 cylinder engines. There are exceptions, like the Lexus GS hybrid, but they get less than favorable gas mileage and the M.S.R.P.’s are usually quite-a-bit higher.

Electric, Gasoline And Hybrid Cars

Electric, Gasoline and Hybrid Cars

The days of dominance of the gas-powered cars in the market are numbered. That is because hybrid vehicles being rolled out and launched by different car makers are creating a wave of interest, curiosity and patronage in the market.

For quite some time, people around the world have been relying on their cars for luxury, convenience and other basic functions. Cars have become a necessity for people that in some countries, it would be hard to live without owning one.

There are a number of issues and concerns regarding man’s reliance and use of cars. For one, prices of gasoline, which is the basic in running cars, are always rising.

Within the past 15 years, gasoline prices have been the most volatile among all the commodities in the world market. That is because the Middle East is the principal supplier and producer of these basic liquids, and you know how political conflicts always arise in the region.

Another setback for the use of cars is the issue on its environmental impact. Running cars use the combustion process of gasoline in the motor and engine, and the process creates massive amounts of pollutants particularly to the air.

There is an emerging green house effect that affects the climate around the world. Experts and environmentalists primarily point out and blame car engine combustion for the ongoing depletion of the protective ozone covering of the planet’s atmosphere.

That prompted car manufacturers to come out with modifications to the old and conventional style and structure of cars. Thus, there are hybrid cars.

Gasoline powered cars

]]>

Gas-powered cars have fuel tanks that supply gasoline or fuel to its engine. The engine, in turn converts the energy produced into transmission, which in turn turns the wheels, making mobility possible.

To be useful and extremely functional, experts have set standards or minimum requirements for cars. First, the car must run at least 300 miles before re-fueling is required. Another, the car must quickly and easily refuel.

Those two factors will ensure that each car will be able to keep up with other cars and prevent traffic congestion and other delays on the road.

The traditional and conventional gasoline powered cars meet those requirements, with flying colors. There are a number of car models out in the market today that offer much more and better features to the demanding consumers.

It should be noted that consumers now are more particular to the exterior design of cars. But to their advantage, the modern slick and beautiful cars are also powered up, making the latest cars not just beautiful but also superior and powerful.

Electric cars

In an attempt to answer the increasing problems on air pollution from car combustions processes, several car manufacturers have come up with cars that are powered not by gasoline but by electricity.

The electricity to be used in running those cars are stored in batteries. Thus, the electric cars have sets of batteries, which provide electricity and energy to the electric motor, which in turn, runs the transmission that turns the wheels.

Thus, no gasoline combustion and carbon monoxide emission is produced. However, one greatest, and most significant setback for the electric car is that it does not meet the specific car power requirements.

Electric cars on the average can only run 50 to 100 miles before electric charging is needed. By that, it falls inferior to the traditional and conventional gasoline powered cars. Another problem is that these cars take longer time to recharge their batteries, to the inconvenience of the user.

Hybrid cars

The contrasting features of the gas-powered cars and the electric cars meet half way through the hybrid cars. Hybrid cars combine the power requirement features of the gas powered and the electric cars.

However, many find hybrid cars a compromise. For one, these cars aim to raise the mileage and lower combustion emissions, and at the same time overcome the limitations of the modern electric cars.

There are a number of hybrid car models out in the market today, though they can be a little overpriced. Before you finally decide to purchase one, be sure to know the outstanding features and setbacks and be prepared for surprising discoveries, which could both be advantageous or disadvantageous.

How Is Clean Tech Different From Green Tech

The concept of “clean tech” is a response to the projected population growth on the planet, which is estimated to be 2.3 billion people by the 2050. The theory is that clean tech companies, which address environmental sustainability as part of their overall business strategy for profitability, will be the model that successful companies will have to use in order address the increasing demand for food, clothing, shelter and other scarce resources that will only increase as incomes rise across the globe.

Where “green tech” evolved in the 1970s from government controls intended to mitigate the effects of manufacturing and agricultural pollutants on the environment, “clean tech” is built into the business model from the very beginning. Green tech has traditionally always seen as an expensive, but required, drain on a company’s profits. Clean tech is built into the business strategy as an acknowledgement that resource scarcity and pollution exist and must be addressed when planning profitable strategies. It is a long the same lines as when a business incorporates the cost of paying office rent or the cost of purchasing manufacturing materials into its overall budget.

Also, there are some products which are included in green funds which would never be included in a clean fund, such as ethanol. Where an alternative energy fund would include a company which produces ethanol in its fund because ethanol is considered to be an alternative to petroleum based fuels, a clean tech fund would not include an ethanol-producing company in its portfolio because of it’s net carbon effect. Ethanol production requires so much petroleum based fuel in order to grow the corn and process it, that there is negligible positive effect on the environment for using it.

Green tech Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) tend to focus narrowly on a single business sector, like energy, manufacturing or recycling. As a result, green energy Exchange Traded Funds can be extremely volatile and sensitive to fluctuations in the price of oil. Clean tech ETFs have not been so volatile (although, in fairness, they have only been around since the Clean Tech Index was created in 2006, so there is not a long history to track). Clean tech companies exist across a broader range of business sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and new materials. As a result, clean tech Exchange Traded Funds have seen a more stable performance, comparable to the returns from the S&P 500 Index.

How long is the Car Batteries Life?

Batteries are made with a series of grids or plates and these are coated with a lead paste, the materials may differ when used on the positive and negative plates. It is when these are immersed in electrolyte, which is diluted sulphuric acid, that the electrons build up a charge on these plates.

When you turn the key in your car, it is the electrons that flow freely through the cables to the starter and all of the electrical system in the car. How many of you have tried to start a car at some time or another with a flat battery, or even worse one that is not as charged up as it should be.

It is the winter months especially when you have to make sure that your battery is in tiptop condition and good working order. It’s these months that batteries have to provide you with maximum power to start your car. Sometimes this can be restricted because of the low temperatures that can occur, and depending of course, as to what area or region you live.

It is worth remembering that the batteries power can become restricted because of any change in the weather for example your battery will only have 40% of its power when you turn your ignition key if the temperature drops below 40c when it actually needs two to three times as much in order for your car to start.

It is always essential for everybody to ensure that your battery is fully charged irrespective of the weather. Having a fully charged battery that will deliver all the power to your car is necessary in the prevention of any mishaps or embarrassing breakdowns.

The difference in a new fully charged battery is that the plate material has no problem in generating all the electrons that are necessary. It is as the battery ages that a lot of the plate material will slowly sulphate or harden. When this starts to happen, it becomes less capable of either producing or holding a charge.

There can often be a difference of opinion as to the actual life of the battery, there are those that say a battery should last approximately five years, this is normally the time when you might experience starting problems when turning your ignition on.

Then it has been known for batteries to last as long as seven years and in some cases longer, normally it is five years or a little over before you may start experiencing any problems. If it goes for a lot longer over this time then you can call that a bonus.

There are a number of things that can happen that will reduce battery life, and some of these things you may be able to avoid by following a simple checklist once a week. One occurrence that can happen is if your battery is sitting loosely, this will cause it vibrate and rattle around eventually cracking material on the plates. This will eventually loosen falling into the bottom of your batteries case.

This in time will cause a problem because the batteries surface area will not produce the electricity needed to function properly, and any loose material could fall in between a positive and negative plate that will cause them to short out and to cease working. That is why when purchasing a battery always go for the good quality one, these come with special sleeves built in around the plates preventing any damage from loose material bridging the two plates.

A common mistake made by most people at some time or other is leaving the car lights on, an easy thing to do in the winter months especially when all you want to do is park the car and go indoors. If the lights are left on until the battery goes dead, this will no doubt cause damage.

Once the battery is discharged, the plate material will start to harden, and it is because of this that the portion of plate affected won’t accept when trying to charge it again. The best solution if possible is if your battery has discharged, you must try to charge it back up as soon as possible. It has been known that if a battery completely discharges more than four times, reducing its capacity, then the only answer is to recycle it and purchase a new battery.

New comer in the mainstream Hybrid Car – Diesel Hybrid Car

Four years ago hybrid cars would seldom be observed in roads and freeways. But as more and more people noticed and realized the good positive aspects this eco-friendly cars give, plus the savings they get, extra and far more hybrid cars are now plying our roads. So a lot to ensure that hybrid cars are now as mainstream as the conventional engine cars that we got employed to. But, it wouldn’t be a surprise if new developments and innovations come out to further develop the existing hybrid technologies or to give new technologies.

Quite a few stories and rumors has circulated in the motor world of various discoveries and conceptions that may further revolutionize the hybrid technology in motor vehicles, but lots of questions have also arisen on why some specific pre-existing technologies have not been incorporated with the hybrid innovation. This includes the diesel hybrid idea.

Diesel engines have been vastly popular in Europe and Asia. Even though North the USA have not embraced the diesel engine as a lot as their overseas neighbors, developments have been manufactured in the United States to eradicate the features which have made it a poor choice here. Recent developments have eliminated the extreme smoke generated and also the loud rattling noises of the engines. Moreover, biodiesel fuel has had an increasing following and is observed as a solution to save the depletion of natural resources like oil. Combining hybrid technology and also the new biodiesel fuel seems to be a better answer to our growing challenges. Biodiesel is now cleaner and is also cheaper than typical gasoline.

Even though there have been no significant R&D done on diesel hybrid cars just yet, Ford has brought out a diesel hybrid idea car at the North Auto American Auto show in Detroit last January 10, 2006. Ford dubbed it as the Reflex sportscar. This is a car that is infused with a power source that uses a combination of a diesel engine, an electric motor and solar panels. Also, the Ford Reflex is all wheel drive car that Ford claims gets 65 miles to a gallon.

The Reflex, which might be the cornerstone for future diesel hybrid cars operates comparable way as gas/electric hybrid cars. It also has a hybrid battery pack to supply backup power to the motor car that gets recharged by the engine along with the heat generated by braking. The diesel Hybrid car by Ford uses lithium-ion batteries, the same kind utilized by the latest gadgets today, like cellular phones and portable computers. Most hybrid cars use nickel-metal hydrite batteries since they’re much more less costly, but lithium-ion batteries have far more power capacity.

But the Reflex also extracts power from solar cells located within the headlamps and taillamps. This is a technologies patented by Ford. There are likewise solar panels placed in the roof of the vehicle that provides power to fans that operates inside the car to cool the interior when it is parked under the hot sun.

We can simply wait until hybrid diesel car technology is a lot more available. Until then, we can wait until diesel fuel can provide the same power as gasoline fuel. But when the technology is refined, we can all be sure that diesel hybrid cars will surely catch on and we’ll be seeing it extra often.
