North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison

The North rim is much harder to get to (windy roads plus about 10 miles of dirt road) but it probably has 1/10th the number of people). Wednesday 15th July 2009-07-15 Woke up somewhat after sunrise (about 6ish) and after lyin still for a while I should the sleep from my body and headed on to the North rim. Spectacular views but really too windy to fly. As I went down the view points on the rim the wind dropped. Finally I decided it was green light on go. First flight went well, but realized that the video looked poor as the cam was always ahead and needed to be pointed downwards to get a good view. The second flight was much more hairy, for the first few minutes it was just a battle to keep it in the air, then the wind dropped and the rest of the flight went well. Moved back down the canyon to the first viewpoint and decided to fly again. 3 minute flight but it went well. Such a rush flying in a no recovery zone. Decided to go for another flight but stopped by ranger. I think he really wanted me to fly its just that he couldnt be seen to endorse it. Windy drive over to Gunnison, stopped at lake on way to wash. Water was a little green for my liking but washed anyway. Very windy. Picked up food in Gunnison and sorted out some files before heading onto Sand dunes. Got there at dusk. Fantastic drive through the Sangre de Cristo valley with the low sun on the dunes and mountains. Had a look around at dunes, slept outside park in car. Car just by roadside but only 4 cars all …

The Thrust SSC Car is driven by twin Rolls-Royce Spey Engines with 11000hp and 50000lbs thrust! They provide the power to achieve 0 to 600mph in just 16 seconds. Run 66 achieved a peak speed of 771mph – Mach 1.02 – and an average speed of 766.609mph over the measured mile! The distance covered during this final run was 14 miles. In this now historic archive video you’ll see the large round “Mach” Speed Meter on the left side of the various dials – as the car pushes through the 700mph barrier you’ll see the Mach Speed Hand rapidly move across the dial to an indicated peak supersonic Mach Speed of an estimated Mach 1.02 – with sonic booms being experienced across the desert flats.
